About: Introduction to Cone 8 - 11 Ash Glazes

Join Margaret Sumich for a hands-on workshop exploring the fascinating world of high-fired ash glazes at Cones8- 11.
This workshop is an opportunity to learn how to develop, test and understand ash glazes for high-temperature firing, with a focus on the qualities that make ash glazes so distinctive.
Participants will have the opportunity to mix and test a selection of ash glaze recipes, experimenting with different ash sources and glaze adjustments.
Margaret will demonstrate her approach to glaze development and share practical knowledge gained through years of working with high-fired ceramics.
Who is it for?
This workshop is aimed at intermediate to experienced potters who have an understanding of basic glaze preparation and firing. It is particularly suited to potters wanting to develop their own high-fire glaze palette and gain a deeper understanding of glaze chemistry and ash glazes.

What to Bring

1. Dry Wood Ash sieved through a kitchen sieve (I shall have enough pine ash if you don’t have ash)
2. Any other ash you wish to test ( dry and sieved or washed)
3.  If you wish to explore washed ash bring it washed
Washing wood ash  removes soluble salts, unburnt charcoal, and caustic lye. This prevents your glaze bucket from over-gelling and gives you a more predictable, stable flux (mainly calcium) (Washing instructions will be provided)
4. Screw cap containers to hold between 200 and 400 mls ( 4 – 6)
5. Small bisque bowl shapes (for glaze testing)( 4 – 6)
6. Accurate scales (if you have them); kitchen sieve; rubber spatula, 80 mesh sieve.
7. Safety gear: mask gloves etc
8. Brushes, sponges,  any colouring agents you wish to test.
